UNLV Fine Arts Exhibit

Think Art – a non profit organization designed to help local artists- featured a fine arts reception Tuesday at Spring Hill Suites.  An entity of  Marriot, one of the hotel’s core values is to serve the spirit of community and has demonstrated this by providing a beautiful venue to showcase local fine arts. All of the featured artists are students from the UNLV bachelor of fine arts or the master of fine arts program. The hotel houses ‘Palettes Gallery and Bistro’ for enthusiasts to enjoy food, drinks and visual arts which is located on the first floor of the hotel.

Points of View is the theme of this exhibit. For each showcased art project the student wrote an art statement regarding the point they are trying to achieve through their art. The artists take in critiques and then refine their projects to help communicate their view. You can capture a small part of the artists personality through each piece as none can compare to the other. The questions is, what is your unique taste?  Most of students were able to show for the event and answer questions. The hotel will change out this exhibit in August to showcase a new one. Pieces of art are priced to sell and all proceeds go to the student artists.

Take the time to head down there and check out the talent of our local artists.

The hotel is located at 2989 Paradise Road.

Pet of the Week: Ramey

Ramey Needs Surgery for Intestinal blockage

Meet Ramey, this week’s pet of the week. Isn’t she adorable? Just look at those eyes.  Ramey was turned into the ARP with intestinal blockage and needed surgery. The people who turned her in did not tell the ARP that the puppy was ill. Vet care is expensive and not free for shelters so the ARP has set up a fundraiser to help little Ramey. Vet care to fix her up cost, $858. All help is appreciated as the ARP works hard to properly take care of these animals, house them and find them homes. Anyone one who donates will be entered into a drawing to win a $25 gas card courtesy of Beyond the Strip. Leave us a comment “helped” to be entered to win. If you can’t adopt a rescue pet, helping monetarily is just as rewarding. Click on Ramey’s picture to go to the fundraiser website and see how to help.

Entrants will be put into a drawing after the money is raised. Winner will be contacted by email and must respond withing 48 hours.

‘Pop Up Pizza’ Feeds Downtown

Pop Up Pizza seemed to do just that at the Plaza hotel in Downtown Las Vegas Tuesday. Tucked in a corner with brand new, clean, shiny equipment, pizza cooking and smiling faces the restaurant was drawing a crowd. There was a nostalgic vintage feel with the bulb ‘pizza’ sign illuminating, claiming downtown style. Oddly enough their mascot is standing in the restaurant area, it’s a giant black horse sculpture with a lamp shade on its head.

The pizzas were cooking and being served steadily. ‘Soho’ is a vegan pizza flavor and the fresh ingredients sent taste buds into over drive with tangy sauce and topped with veggies. All the pizzas feature clever names, such as 5th street, Newport, White Chapel and there was even a Goodman. No surprise there, Oscar Goodman showed with the honor of slicing the first pizza.  The former mayor of Las Vegas did have a little trouble slicing, it all worked out though when he handed the pizza slicer over to one of the restaurants’ partners who helped him out.

The grand opening offered free slices of pizza to people and there seemed to be a never ending line of customers. The restaurant had no problem feeding everyone by keeping the counters lined with freshly baked pizzas. People had smiles on their faces as they gobbled up slices and chatted with one another. One of the customers, Dakota Thompson, commented on how great it was that the pizza was “not greasy”. The generosity did not stop with just the food either, there also was bottled organic tea provided at no cost and coupons for free slices of pizza were scattered amongst the tables.

One unique aspect I noticed during my visit, was there were no illuminating menus overhead to display their selections. In fact, I did not find menus anywhere, including online. Seems a little secretive and even when one of the restaurants’ partners was asked what ‘Pop Up’ meant, he only grinned back and said, “I don’t want to spoil the surprise”. We love surprises, right Las Vegas?

Thumbs up to the new downtown pizza place for providing an exciting atmosphere for locals to enjoy! Definitely go check it out and let us know what you think. Hours are from 11am to 2am daily.

Sunflowers Market Soon ‘Sprouts’

Sunflower Market customers can look forward to a few changes, as the company has merged with Sprouts Markets. Sprouts is a whole foods market founded by Stan and Shon Boney. The company has roots that trace back to Henry Boney a poor farmer and entrepreneur who back in 1943 started his first peach stand in California. Henry passed down his dedication to providing quality foods to his sons Stan and Steve Boney who successfully ran Henry’s Marketplace until it sold in 1999. The father and son team then created Sprouts in 2002 a market specializing in the whole foods. Eventually as fate would have it Henry’s Marketplace and Sprouts merged in April 2011 making it the largest whole foods retailer in the Western US. Sprouts was named 2010 retailer of the year by ‘Gourmet News Magazine’.

On March 9th of this year, under majority ownership and sponsorship of the leading private equity firm Apollo, Sprouts announced that it will also be uniting with Sunflower Market. Although as of now, the two are competitors, the merger will eventually bring Sprouts into Nevada, Utah, New Mexico and Oklahoma.  With the merger, the company will operate 142 stores and have over 10,000 employees under the ‘Sprouts’ name. CEO’s plan to take on the best practices from both stores and create a whole foods market that will deliver products based around the community and culture of the area. There are plans for all Sunflower Market locations to stay open.
‘Sprouts’ has already promised to offer the Las Vegas community a few things, here’s what they include:

  • Influx of interesting new products
  • Better prices
  • More employment opportunities
  • Improve operations by taking the best of both stores.

Change is essential for prosperity and growth. Keep an eye out as plans to rebrand Sunflower Market are set for Mid July.  It sounds like the whole foods industry just got a little sweeter for Las Vegas.
