Rediscovoring Downtown, “Once You Come Down,You’ll Be Back”

With crime rates in Downtown Las Vegas decreasing the dark days of the historic community seem to be coming to an end. Now organizers are showing locals this is the entertainment “hot spot” for the Las Vegas community. To get the scoop, we sat down with Terry Murphy of Strategic Solutions involved with the campaign, Rediscovering Downtown. She is one of the many businesses apart of The Downtown Las Vegas Alliance. The members of the group are businesses in the area who are sponsoring the 6 month long campaign that kicked off a couple of weeks ago. Their mission is to show people along with its history, downtown has something new and fresh to offer.

Terry explained how downtown has been in the developing stages for a while and even though it may seem like various events and businesses are popping up out of nowhere, that’s not the case. There has been a lot of hard work put in by the community to clean up and  redesign downtown; now it’s starting to show. Downtown still is the host of great historic places like Four Queens, Golden Nugget and El Cortez for entertainment. Nowadays, the area has more entertainment to offer like the Mob and Neon museums, great new restaurants and bars, the Smith Center for Performing Arts with still more to come. That’s right, construction plans are already in the works including some from downtown supporter and Zappos CEO, Tony Hsieh.

Also, the alliance has teamed up with the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and Wellsfargo to organize a small business symposium in October. Terry refers to it as a “boot camp” aimed at aspiring entrepreneurs who are considering starting a downtown business. There will be advisors at the symposium to answer questions, give financial advice, inform on legal obligations and get people started in the right direction.

October 13th of this year will be celebrated as Rediscover Downtown Day with the campaign concluding. Organizers plan to make it a day full of events, activities and entertainment throughout downtown so be sure to mark your calendars. Although, you can come downtown any day of the week to have a good time. It is fun, laid back, full of culture and there is always something going on. In the words of Terry Murphy, “You don’t know what your missing so get down here and see what downtown has to offer”.
